Russell I. Avery, 82, of Kalamazoo, and formerly of Sturgis, died March 9, 2012, at Rose Arbor Hospice Residence in Kalamazoo.
He was born June 19, 1929, in Lowell, a son of Harvey and Thelma (Perry) Avery. He attended Sturgis High School. Russ owned and operated Russ Avery Marine in Portage for more than 40 years, retiring in 1999. He enjoyed hunting, car auctions and attending the Detroit Auto Show.
He was a loving father and grandfather who will be truly missed.
He is survived by his children, Phillip Avery of Sturgis, Cheryl (Tom) Rose of Augusta and Brian (Laura) Avery of Avon, Ind.; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Pam Gearhart; and several nieces.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Donald Avery.
Visitation is a 10-11 a.m. Saturday at Whitley Memorial Funeral Home, 330 N. Westnedge Ave.,Kalamazoo.
A funeral service is at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
