St. Joseph County is on its way to having its own Marine Corps League.
Following a 90-minute meeting Saturday at Mendon Village Hall, a group seeking the county’s own league was given preliminary approval from the state’s top league official.
With a turnout of nearly 20 prospective members at the organizational meeting, the only hurdle to clear is the national organization’s decision to validate the new chapter.
Annual membership is $30, while yearly renewal will likely cost $18.
A temporary slate of four officers was selected Saturday, though six positions will be filled permanently by an election process once the chapter is formally sanctioned by the national organization.
The group will likely meet monthly once all the preliminary work is out of the way. Its next meeting is set for 2 p.m. April 14 at Mendon Village Hall.
The only other area chapters are in Coldwater, Kalamazoo and Benton Harbor.
St. Joseph County’s league is also open to any former Fleet Marine Force Navy Corpsman.
