Roy Michael Sayre, age 58, of Sturgis, passed away unexpectedly Sunday morning, April 1, 2012, at Three Rivers Health.
He was born March 15, 1954, in St. Johns, Newfoundland, Canada, to Jack H. and Florence (Ebbs) Sayre.
Roy was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving overseas aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise and had worked in management at Toys-R-Us, from which he retired. He enjoyed books, classical music, was an animal lover, especially dogs, he truly had the gift of gab and a terrific sense of humor.
Surviving are his mother, Florence Sayre of Sturgis; sister, Sharon (Lester) Hertlein of McGaheysville, Va.; nephew, Brian Hertlein and fiancée Arielle Dejnauski; niece, Angela Hertlein; great-niece, Jaida Hertlein; great-nephew, Liam Hertlein; his dog, Gunther; and several aunts, uncles, and many cousins.
He was preceded in death by his father.
According to his wishes, cremation has taken place.
A memorial services celebrating the life of Roy Sayre will be held at 2 p.m. April 12 at Hackman Family Funeral Home — Hackman Chapel, 114 S. Nottawa St., Sturgis. Full military rites will be conferred by the U.S. Navy Honor Guard and the Capt. John J. Kelley V.F.W. Post #1355 of Sturgis.
Private entombment of the ashes will take place at the Oak Lawn Cemetery Columbarium at a later date.
The family suggest memorial donations be directed to St. Jude’s Childrens Hospital or to Paralyzed Veteran of America. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
