Matson selected to city commission

A longtime former member of the Three Rivers Zoning Board of Appeals has been appointed to the Three Rivers City Commission.

Larry Matson was selected Tuesday from a pool of three candidates interested in filling the seat left vacant by Ken Baker. Baker resigned from the commission April 2 due to health-related issues.

Mayor Tom Lowry and commissioners during Tuesday’s city commission meeting anguished over their choices, as the 68-year-old Matson, Mike Gilpin and James Everett all presented solid credentials and a strong case for their potential selection.

In the end, Matson being the only candidate from the city’s Third District and his 13 years on the ZBA worked in his favor. A retired personnel secretary from the Battle Creek VA Hospital, Matson will stay on board into November. He said he’ll run at that time for the remaining 12 months left from Baker’s original two-year term.
