Greta Johnson, 50

Greta (Webb) Johnson, 50, of Northport, Ala., and a former Sturgis resident, died unexpectedly Thursday, April 12, 2012, in Tuscaloosa, Ala. 

She was born Nov. 24, 1961, in Arkansas. 

Greta had resided in Alabama since 1993. Her early life was lived in Sturgis and she was a graduate of Sturgis High School with the class of 1980, where she excelled in athletics. Following her graduation from high school she continued her education at Olivet College, where she was a member of the women’s basketball team. She later transferred to Glen Oaks Community College, where she also played basketball. 

Greta was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in Germany. While serving her country, she was injured in a Humvee accident in Germany that forced her into medical retirement from the Army. 

She enjoyed playing basketball and chess, and loved going to her church.

She is survived by a son, Justin Johnson at home; her parents, Grace Griffin of Sturgis and Gatt (Sharon) Webb of Sturgis; two brothers, Lepoleon “Donkey” Sample Jr. of Alabama and Derrick (Michelle) Webb of Sturgis; a sister-in-law, Judy Vargo of Elkhart, Ind.; nieces and nephews Nick Sample of Elkhart, Lindsey Saunders of Chicago, Shane Richardson of Elkhart, and Dylan Webb, Rachel Webb and Madison Webb, all of Sturgis. 

In accordance with family wishes, cremation has taken place. The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. Sunday at Hackman Family Funeral Homes — Rosenberg Chapel, 807 E. Chicago Road, Sturgis. 

A memorial service celebrating the life of Greta Webb Johnson will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 30, at the funeral home. The Rev. Deb Johnson of First United Methodist Church in Sturgis will officiate. Full military honors will be conferred by Captain John J. Kelley Post #1355 VFW and the U.S. Army Honor Guard. Private burial of the ashes will take place at a later date at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be directed to the Justin Johnson Trust Account, 300 W. Chicago Road, Sturgis, MI 49091.
