Out and About – Week of May 7th

This Sunday, May 13, is Mother’s Day, a day set aside each year to honor the lady responsible for giving us life. My mother has been gone for over twenty-five years now, and I still miss her every day. If your mother is still alive, let her know how much she means to you, and thank her for giving you life. If your mother resides in a nursing home, visit her often and remind her that she has not been forgotten. She cared for you as you were growing up; it’s now up to you to care for her in her golden years.

This Saturday, May 12, is the 20th Annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive. Letter carriers lead the drive sponsored by the National Rural Letter Carriers’ Association, Campbell Soup Company, Valpak, U.S. Postal Service, United Way, AFL-CIO, Feeding America, Uncle Bob’s Self Storage, and AARP. All you need to do to help is place a bag or two of non-perishable food next to your mailbox. Your letter carrier will handle the rest. I might suggest that you personally thank your mail carrier for going above and beyond the call to help relieve the hunger crisis in our communities.

Our friends at the Riviera Theatre, located in historic downtown Three Rivers, have once again provided us with a month’s supply of top-notch entertainment. If you are a sushi lover, you might want to check out Jiro Dreams of Sushi. It’s a brief biography of Jiro Ono, considered by many to be the world’s greatest sushi chef. The dialogue is in Japanese, with English subtitles, and appears on the big screen this Saturday, May 12 at 8:30 P.M. and again Saturday, May 26, at 3 P.M.

If you’re a fan of opera, Ernani, an early Verdi opera, with English subtitles, will be shown Mother’s Day, May 13, at 3 P.M., and once again Tuesday, May 22, at 6 P.M. Admission is $16.

Perhaps live musical entertainment is your cup of tea. On Saturday, May 19, you have the opportunity to be entertained by four different bands. “End of Reason”, “This Haunted City”, “Sound the Silent”, and “Iron Hyde” will perform beginning at 9 P.M. Admission is $5. You’re invited to visit www.trriviera.com for advance tickets, movie trailers, or more information on these and other events happening at your historic Riviera Theatre.

Thanks to the Animal Rescue Fund’s newsletter, here are some interesting things you might not know about catnip. Catnip is a member of the mint family, which has about 250 species. Not all cats are affected by it; as a matter of fact, fifty percent don’t respond to catnip. Catnip is not just for cats. It has been grown in medicinal gardens for its sedative effect on humans. When made into a tea, it has been known to have a calming effect similar to chamomile. Whether for human or feline use, to keep it fresh, store it in the freezer in an airtight container or bag.

The Animal Rescue Fund (ARF) thanks all those people who helped make their recent dinner/auction a huge success. The proceeds received will benefit the animals of St. Joseph County. If you are interested in being a volunteer with ARF, their meetings are held the second Monday of the month at the ISD building on Shimmel Road, east of Centreville. The meetings begin at 7 P.M. They would be happy to have you join them.

Are you an artist without a studio? Do you have ideas that you’d like to share with other artists, or do you have an open mind, willing to learn more? The Three Rivers Community Center has just the answer for your artistic talents. Young at Art Open Studio is open Thursdays from 5 to 7 P.M. at the Three Rivers Community Center, 103 South Douglas Avenue, Three Rivers. They invite all artists without dedicated studio space to gather, participate, and create. Best thing about this is that there is no charge to participate.

Until next week, here are some facts about Lake Superior that you might not know:

The deepest point in the lake is 1333 feet.

By surface area, it is the largest lake in the world.

The average underwater visibility of Lake Superior is about 27 feet, making it the cleanest and clearest of all the Great Lakes.

See you Out and About!
