Charlie Jones, 72

Charles Ross Jones, age 72, of Sturgis, passed away Monday morning, July 23, 2012, at his home.

He was born Oct. 4, 1939, in Corbin, Ky., a son of James Leonard and Delia (Smith) Jones.

Charlie resided in Sturgis since 1970, coming from Kentucky. On Nov. 23, 1974, he married Donna Smead at Assembly of God Church in Three Rivers.

He was a welding foreman employed by Formed Tubes in Sturgis for several years until the company closed. Following the closing of the company, he joined Rood Industries, where he worked for several years until his retirement. Charlie also had worked at Sturgis Iron and Metal and was a truck driver for RC Cola.

Charlie was proud to have served his country in the U.S. Army and the U.S. Marine Corps, earning the rank of corporal.

He enjoyed fishing, visiting casinos, working on cars, traveling and could often be found sitting on his porch listening to music. Charlie had many interests, but what he had a true passion for was horses. He was a talented trainer of racehorses and loved watching and following horse races.

He is survived by six daughters, Nancy (Jim) Stallard of Burr Oak, Shannan (Scot) Jones of Sturgis, Robin (David) McClish of LaGrange, Ind., Linda Hamilton of Sturgis, Char Hamilton-Jones of Sturgis and Linda Jones of Kentucky; two sons, Randy (Dee) Jones of Marshall and Kevin Jones of Sturgis; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; two sisters, Wanda Dickerson of Cincinnati and Ruth (Jason) Brock of Corbin; and his lifelong best friend, Larry Monroe of Howe, Ind.

He was preceded in death by parents; and several brothers and sisters.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Hackman Family Funeral Homes – Hackman Chapel, 114 S. Nottawa St., Sturgis.

Funeral services celebrating the life of Charles Ross Jones will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. The Rev. Glenn Russell will officiate. In accordance with Charlie’s wishes, cremation will follow the service.
