Stephen Boyle, 73

Stephen Robert Boyle left this world on July 28, 2012, leaving his beloved wife Kathleen and legacy of children Kimberly, Stephen, Kristine, Kathleen, Kandice, Sean, and Michael, as well as 10 grandchildren.

Stephen was born May 5, 1939, in New York City to Robert E.A. Boyle and Mary Brokaw Boyle, and grew up in Sturgis, where his father was a circuit court judge. He lettered in football, baseball and basketball, and was honored as an All-State Athlete in the latter. He married his high-school sweetheart, Kathleen Goethals, sister of James Goethals of Sturgis, on June 24, 1961. Stephen was a 1961 graduate of the University of Michigan’s Engineering School, and was a proud Wolverine. He enjoyed watching U-M football throughout his life, particularly when one of his many U-M graduate children was enrolled there and could enjoy the game with him and Kathleen.

His life was an amazing journey that took him and his family to all corners of the world. Stephen was a civil engineer with US Steel Corporation, and his vast expertise building cold rolling steel mills took them to such exotic places as Spain, Taiwan and Indonesia. Stephen and his wife were able to build their dream house in Bloomfield Hills before they moved to the Monterey Peninsula to be close to many of their children in the San Francisco Bay area. He and his wife recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary surrounded by their family on the beautiful California coast they call home. Stephen’s favorite memories in life were of traveling throughout Europe with his wife and seven children.

On July 28, he lost a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and brother, and he will be fondly remembered and loved always.

Stephen’s Memorial Mass will be held at 9:30 a.m. Aug. 11 at San Carlos Cathedral, 500 Church St., Monterey, Calif.
