Eugene Barnes, 85

Eugene I. Barnes, 85, of Wolcottville, Ind., died Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2012, at 12:50 p.m. in his residence.

He moved to this area over 20 years ago from Sturgis.

Mr. Barnes was a self-employed brick mason. He retired after 25 years with Inland Steel in East Chicago, Ind. He was a missionary through the Wesleyan Church in Sturgis, serving in several countries around the world.

He was a member of the Wolcottville United Methodist Church and Bricklayers Local 6 in Merrillville.

He was born Feb. 27, 1927, in Sturgis, to Willis and Opal (Gruball) Barnes. On May 24, 1951, he married Barbara Lou Honaker in Valentine. She survives in Wolcottville.

Also surviving are a daughter, Jerri Smith of Fort Wayne; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Kim and Diane Barnes of Albion and Steven R. Barnes of Colon; seven grandchildren; one great-grandson; and a sister, Marion Fleming of Quincy.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Leon Barnes.

Funeral services will beat 4 p.m. Saturday at Young Family Funeral Home, Wolcottville Chapel, SR 9 North, Wolcottville, with the Rev. Carldean Merrifield officiating. Burial will be at a later date.
