Action on a potential change to when commissioner elections take place was postponed by Sturgis municipal officials last week.
A public hearing was slated to take place Wednesday, based on a bill under consideration at the time in the Michigan State Legislature. The bill would allow cities that currently elect their councils or commissions in odd-numbered years, as the city of Sturgis does, to move the elections to even-numbered years.
Commissioners moved to expedite consideration of the issue in order for a decision to be effective for the next regular commission election in 2013. Moving the election date has the potential to save the city around $5,000 every other year, according to Mike Hughes, city manager.
Following final passage of the legislation by the State House and Senate Dec. 14, however, it was unclear whether the legislation as passed would allow for action before 2013.
