Purchase of dog has been tabled

A proposal to purchase a dog for therapeutic and calming purposes has been tabled by the St. Joseph County Board of Commissioners.

The proposal was raised last month, when Linda Baker, victims’ rights coordinator who works for the county prosecutor’s office, offered to keep the dog privately but bring it to the courthouse for the benefit of victims or witnesses who need a calming presence when they meet with prosecutors and investigators for interviews related to a case.

Upon further review, commissioners have decided to postpone what would be about a $500 purchase in order to poll courthouse employees regarding the presence of a dog in Baker’s office area.

Employees will be asked to confirm whether they are OK with the proposal or have allergies or fears that may present a concern over the animal’s presence.
