We’re more than half way through January, and the winter has not been that bad so far. I’m sure we’ll have our share of stormy weather, but right now, every nice day is a bonus. The snow blower is filled with gasoline and ready for whatever Mother Nature sends our way. I’ve been reminded that we need the snow for the water table, but for me, I’ll take rain. It’s easier to shovel.
Thank you Danielle and the Riviera Theatre for a fantastic weekend. If I were sightless, I’d have sworn that Simon and Garfunkel and Tim McGraw appeared on your stage. Friends from Paw Paw had their first experience at the Riviera last Friday evening. They will be back.
A casserole dish of macaroni and cheese is sometimes referred to as “comfort food”. It’s sort of hard to beat on a cold winter day. A bowl of hot chili doesn’t sound too bad, either. The Riviera Theatre will host a HarmonyFest Chili and Homebrew Beer Cook-off fundraiser Saturday, February 2, from 7 to 9PM, at the theatre. I’ve participated in a chili cook-off before, and it’s really a lot of fun. The best part is sampling all the entries. Add homebrew craft beer sampling, and you’ve got yourself a fun-filled evening for sure. HarmonyFest is coming up next Labor Day weekend, and this fundraiser will help support this musical Sunday afternoon next September. Did I mention that this fundraiser is FREE? Open Arms, a homeless shelter housed at the First United Methodist Church, in Three Rivers, is in need of volunteers. Located at 215 North Main Street, the shelter is open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights from 7PM to 7AM. The volunteers work in pairs, so you’re never alone, and it’s a secure venue. By volunteering, you’ll find that this is an easy and rewarding way to give back to your community. For more information, or to volunteer, contact Arlene Thompson at 269-858-8715. The Animal Rescue Fund (ARF) will host a “Fur Bowl” Saturday, February 2, at South Lanes, on West Broadway, just east of the Broadway Avenue and US-131 intersection, in Three Rivers. The bowling will run from 1 until 4PM. The cost for adults is $12 and those 12 and under will pay $8. The fee includes three games and shoes. Hot dogs, pop, and fries will be available for $1 each. You may purchase tickets at the door, or if you prefer advance purchase, stop by Beam Sound & Video on West Michigan Avenue in Three Rivers. You still have over a week to stop by South Lanes and get in a few practice games.
Tickets are now on sale for the upcoming production of $an Fran $ale, a play written and directed by the Three Rivers Community Players’ own Shannon Piper. Performance dates are February 8, 9, 10, 15, 16, and 17. The Friday and Saturday performances begin at 8PM, and the curtain goes up for the Sunday matinees at 2PM. Tickets for adults are $15, and tickets for students and senior citizens are $13. They may be purchased by going to TRCP’s website at www.trcommunityplayers.org. They will also be available at the door. All performances will, of course, be performed at the Players’ Theatre, on Millard Road, directly behind Dairy Queen, in Three Rivers.
Friday evening has a reputation for the time to take the family out for a bite to eat. This Friday, February 25, the Marcellus VFW, located on M-40, just south of Marcellus, will host a steak fry from 5 to 7PM. For $12, you’ll receive a New York Strip Steak, baked potato, salad bar, and roll. This is open to the public. Also this Friday, and open to the public in Colon, the American Legion will host an all-you-can-eat ocean perch fish fry, from 5:30 to 8PM. The cost is $8.50 for adults and $4.for children ages 5 to 10. Carryouts will be available for $8.50 after 6PM.
