Lila Marie Gemmill, age 88, of Sturgis, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2013, at Thurston Woods Village.
She was born April 17, 1924, in Hillsdale County, a daughter of the late Floyd and Clara (Sarles) Lyon.
On Aug. 30, 1941, she married Richard John Gemmill in Newport, Ky. He preceded her in death Jan. 18, 1986.
Lila had been a resident of Sturgis and Burr Oak since 1962, moving here from Hillsdale.
She was a homemaker, a seamstress and a caretaker for the elderly, and she enjoyed gardening and camping.
Surviving are three daughters, Brenda Dingwitz and Sharon (Ed) Herrmann, both of Sturgis, and Laurel Groat of Panama City, Fla.; 11 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Evelyn (Bill) Andrews of Sturgis; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Richard; a daughter, Marcia Worthing; two grandsons, Scott Herrmann and Robert Worthing; three brothers; and three sisters.
The family will receive friends and relatives from 2-4 p.m. Sunday at Hackman Family Funeral Home — Rosenberg Chapel, 807 E. Chicago Road, Sturgis.
Interment will take place at 1 p.m. Monday in Burr Oak Cemetery. Memorial donations may be directed to the American Cancer Society. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
