Barbara DeBack, 94

Barbara E. DeBack, age 94, of Colon, passed away, Jan. 27, 2013, at Sturgis Hospital.

Barbara was born, June 4, 1918, in Deerfield, Mich., a daughter to the late Arthur G. and Mae (Barnaby) Starks.

Barbara grew up in Adrian, Mich., graduating from Adrian High School in 1936, moving to Colon after her marriage in 1945.

Barbara Married John W. DeBack on Dec. 9, 1945, in Colon. He preceded her in death on Dec. 22, 1983.

Barbara had owned and operated with her husband the DeBack Grocery Store in Colon until 1965, she then worked for Harding’s grocery in Bronson and retired from Harding’s East in Sturgis.

Barbara was a life member of the Colon Garden Club and a past member of the Colon American Legion Woman’s Auxiliary

Barbara loved time spent at their cabin in Paulding in the Upper Peninsula, fishing, mushrooming and watching the wildlife. She also enjoyed sewing, crocheting, crossword puzzles, golfing, traveling and her granddogs, Dottie and Kaiyuh.

She is survived by her daughter Ann E. DeBack of Mendon and son James A. DeBack of Colon, a sister-in-law Marian Starks of Grand Rapids and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a brother Arthur L. Starks in 1977.

The family will receive relatives and friends on Wednesday, from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at the Schipper Funeral Home LTD. in Colon. Funeral services celebrating the life of Barbara E. DeBack will be Thursday, Jan. 31, 2013 at 11 a.m. from the funeral home with Mr. David J. Farrell officiating. Burial will follow at Lakeside Cemetery in Colon.

If desired the family suggest memorials be made in memory of Barb to the Colon Rescue Squad or Colon Garden Club. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
