George H. VanWormer, 76

George Hadley VanWormer , age 76, of Colon, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2013, at his home, after several months of failing health.

George was born July 17, 1936, in Hillsdale, a son of the late Basil and Lucille (Clark) VanWormer.

On April 29, 1961, he married Betty (Castle) Stevens.

George had lived most of his adult life in rural Colon, where he was a jack of all trades. He had farmed and also was a truck driver.

He is survived by his wife, Betty of Colon; five sons, David (Eloise) VanWormer of Goldsboro, N.C., Jay (Dona) VanWormer of Colon, Raymond VanWormer of Leonidas, Gary (Chris) VanWormer of Decherd, Tenn., and Billy (Mary) VanWormer of Colon; 24 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Everett (Sharon) VanWormer of Union City, Hershel (Jewel) VanWormer of Union City and Sheldon VanWormer of Tekonsha; two sisters, Harriet (Thomas) Rowlson of Burr Oak and Shirley (Bob) Abendroth of Doweling; several nieces and nephews and close friends.

He was preceded in death by three grandchildren, Damian, Jimmy and Sami VanWormer; and a brother, Clyde VanWormer.

The family will receive relatives and friends from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Friday at Schipper Funeral Home in Colon. Funeral services celebrating the life of George H. VanWormer will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 2, 2013, at the funeral home, with Mr. David J. Farrell officiating. Cremation will follow.

If desired, the family suggests memorials be made in memory of George to the family. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
