Ellie Elzinga, 85

Ellen Mae “Ellie” Elzinga, age 85, of Centreville, died Monday, April 8, 2013 at Fairview Nursing and Rehabilitation in Centreville where she had been a patient for two months. Ellie was born in Banks, MI and was the daughter of George M. and Ruth (Rubert) Elzinga. She was a graduate of Ellsworth High School in Antrim County, MI. Ellie worked at a paper mill in Kalamazoo before she began work with the Haas Corporation, later known as Lear Plastics in Mendon, where she was the former President of U.A. W. Local 503. After retirement she was a volunteer for the American Red Cross where she assisted with disaster relief across the country. She was a cat lover, raised Airedale Terriers, and supported the Animal Rescue Fund in St. Joseph County. She enjoyed the outdoors, working in her yard and garden.

Ellie is survived by her companion of over 30 years, Leslie Morris; Leslie’s daughter, Sherrie (Juan) Melendez; and grandchildren, Alex and Stephanie.

In keeping with her wishes cremation has been conducted. Memorial services are planned for 2:00 p.m. Sunday April 21, 2013 at the Schoolcraft United Methodist Church with Pastor Karen Wheat officiating. Memorials may be directed to the Animal Rescue Fund.
