Sgt. Desmond Davis, 41

Sgt. Desmond Eli Davis, Michigan Army National Guard, age 41, of Sturgis, Mich., passed away Thursday evening, June 13, 2013, at his home after a courageous battle with ALS.

He was born Nov. 17, 1971, in Kendallville, Ind., son of David and Sandra (Brown) Davis.

Desmond resided in Sturgis and was a graduate of Westview High School in Topeka, Indiana with the class of 1990.

On Nov. 17, 2010, he married Kimberly Ware in Sturgis. She is the daughter of Ann Ware and Jack Wyer, II.

Desmond was a Sergeant in the Michigan Army National Guard currently stationed at the Regional Training Institute at Fort Custer in Augusta, Mich. He was a highly decorated soldier serving in Desert Storm and Iraqi Freedom. Some of his many decorations and accomplishments include Purple Heart, Army Commendation (4th award), Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal (2nd award), National Defense Service Medal (2nd award), South West Asia Service Medal with three Bronze Service Stars and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.

He enjoyed music, computer gaming, rollercoasters and amusement parks and traveling.

Kimberly would like to thank her mom; grandparents, Richard and Dolores Ware; aunt, Debra Miller; and her little brothers for their constant help and support.

Desmond is survived by his loving wife, Kimberly; his children, Kiele Davis and Desmond Davis; mother, Sandra Brown of LaGrange, Ind.; father and step-mother, David and Diane Davis of Grand Ledge; four sisters, Jennifer Davis, Terri Willoughby, Jeny Willoughby and Chrisi McFarren; and one brother, Andy Davis.

In accordance with his wishes cremation has taken place. The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Hackman Family Funeral Homes – Rosenberg Chapel, 807 E. Chicago Rd., Sturgis, MI 49091, (269) 651-3284. A graveside service and burial of the ashes will take place at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta, Michigan. Full military honors will conferred by the Fort Custer Honor Guard and the U.S. Army Honor Guard.
