Residents suggest resigning

A pair of St. Joseph County residents suggested Commissioner Don Eaton resign from the five-member county board.

Fabius Township’s Rebecca Shank and Florence Township’s Tim Carls addressed the county board of commissioners Tuesday, and both indicated Eaton should consider relinquishing his post as Second District commissioner.

Eaton, 52, is being investigated for a potential charge of possession of a firearm while intoxicated following an incident the night of July 29 at the Sturgis Applebee’s restaurant.

Tuesday was the first county commission since news media accounts of the incident have been published and aired.

While Eaton did not respond to Shank or Carls, Commissioner Robin Baker said in defense of the board of commissioners, the two should let the investigation conclude before passing judgment.

The case is under review by Cass County Prosecutor Victor Fitz.
