Millage increase before voters

A millage-increase request before voters in the Mendon Community Schools district is one step closer to reality.

By unanimous vote Monday, board of education members approved a preliminary qualification application to the Michigan Department of Treasury. The action means the district is in the process of seeking approval from the state agency to issue state-qualified bonds.

The district’s bond attorney, Mike Gressens, said the step is a routine matter most school districts follow in preparation of placing a ballot proposal before its voters.

He said the state treasury between now and the board’s Dec. 16 meeting will review the application and issue preliminary qualification approval. The matter will become official pending a board vote at next month’s meeting.

The district is exploring whether to ask voters to approve a 1-mill request that would generate about $9.3 million for a number of upgrades at its elementary building and middle school/high school site.
