Max H. Miller, age 93, of Sturgis, and formerly of Burr Oak, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2013, at Bowman House Assisted Living, in Three Rivers.
Max was born June 17, 1920, in Fulton, a son of the late Henry M. and Juanita E. (Fisk) Miller.
He was a lifelong resident of the Sturgis and Burr Oak area.
On March 27, 1944, he married Jeanne L. Mayer in Phoenix. She preceded him in death July 31, 1983. On Dec. 6, 1985, he married Marie (Strong) Gordon in Burr Oak. She preceded him Oct. 5, 2013.
He had served in the U.S. Army with the 521st Engineers, during World War II.
Max had worked 36 years for the St. Joseph County Road Commission, retiring in 1982. Max and his wife were avid fishermen and loved to watch birds.
He is survived by a son, Marty Miller of Maryland; a daughter Cathy Velie of White Pigeon; a stepdaughter, Dorothy (Larry) Smith of Centreville; step-daughter-in-law Pat Gordon of Sturgis; grandchildren Michelle of Maryland, Vicky of Sturgis and Jerry Jr. of Sturgis; step-grandchildren Lisa of Fort Meyers, Billy of Sturgis and Bobby of Three Rivers; and many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a grandson, Jason Miller; a stepson, Gary Gordon; a step-grandson Gary Gordon Jr.; and five brothers.
In accordance to his wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 13, 2013, at Schipper Funeral Home in Colon, with Pastor David Peterson officiating. Private burial of ashes will take place in Burr Oak Cemetery, Burr Oak. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in memory of Max to the charity of one’s choice.
