Requesting more millage

Members of the Mendon Community Schools Board of Education unanimously agreed Monday to seek approval of a 1-mill, $9.3 million request.

If the measure is endorsed, it would allow the 635-student district to make major improvements to Mendon Middle School/High School and Mendon Elementary School, according to board president Roger Cupp.

The request will appear before voters Feb. 25.

Cupp said the board has few options other than to turn to voters for the extra funds. He said the district’s two buildings are in critical need of attention.

If the request is approved, the work would be done in three phases, with construction bonds sold over periods of time instead of all at once.

The district plans to host a public forum Jan. 8 at Mendon Elementary, where Superintendent Rob Kuhlman and board members will be on hand to provide more information about the proposed millage increase.

If approved, the proposed millage would cost the owner of a house with a market value of $100,000 an additional $50 a year.
