Maudy Arlene Hackett, age 75, of Centreville, Mich., and formerly of Sturgis, passed away Monday morning Dec. 30, 2013, at the Fairview Nursing and Rehabilitation Community in Centreville, Mich.
She was born Aug. 15, 1938, in Kalamazoo, Mich., daughter of the late Henry and Corneilia Griffioen.
Maudy moved to Sturgis in 1976 from Kalamazoo. On Jan. 17, 1969, she married Richard Carl Hackett in Kalamazoo. He died Jan. 12, 1993.
Maudy retired in 2000 following 24 years of dedicated service as the manager of Gateway Village Apartments in Sturgis.
She was a member of the Sturgis Baptist Church and enjoyed knitting, sewing, fishing, feeding and watching birds and cooking. She truly loved time spent with family, especially her grandchildren.
The family would like to express their sincere thanks to Kathy Griffioen for her never ending visits to see and be of help to Maudy.
She is survived by three sons, Charlie (Erin) Hackett of Sturgis, Scott (Jodi) DeVries of Portage and Rick (Jen) DeVries of Petoskey; nine grandchildren, Ryan (Leslie), Colin, Mason, Rachel and Josh DeVries, Caleb, Adalae, Emerson and Bailey Hackett; one brother, Hank (Henrietta) Griffioen of Portage and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one sister, Henrietta Klosterman and one brother, John Griffioen.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the Hackman Family Funeral Homes – Hackman Chapel, 114 S. Nottawa St., Sturgis, MI 49091, 269-651-2331. Funeral services celebrating the life of Maudy Hackett will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Sturgis Baptist Church in Sturgis. Pastors Paul Delmark and Greg Long will officiate. Private burial will take place at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta.
