Out and About – Week of April 6

This is a special week. If you’re a student here in St. Joe County, you’re on spring break. If you’re a student with money, you’re not here in St. Joe County, but you’re probably contributing to the economy of Florida, Mexico, or some other locale where the sun is shining and the temperature is in the eighties. If you’re a student with moderate means, you’re probably working your part-time job and spending your evenings playing Monopoly with your parents. For most of the community, I would hope that you are observing this very holy week. Last Sunday was Palm Sunday, which means that Thursday is Passover, Friday is Good Friday and Sunday is, of course, Easter.

As a child, I received new shoes At Easter time. This meant that my old new shoes became my everyday shoes. I’ll stop with that, but add that Easter was a very special time for me as a kid. Girls my age were wearing new dresses and new shoes. As the song says, “The times, they are a changing.” Anyway, a very happy Easter to all of you, and may you celebrate the season in your special way.

It might be a bit early, but when it comes to food, I feel it’s important to get the word out right away. I’ll try to remember to remind everyone again next week. In any case, the Animal Rescue Fund (ARF), will hold an “all-you-can-eat mostaccioli dinner and auction, Saturday, April 18 beginning at 5:30 P.M. at the Three Rivers High School cafeteria. The auction will begin at 6:30 with items donated by local businesses. If you would like to have the dinner, tickets are $8 for adults and $4 for children. Tickets are not required for the auction. If you need more information, phone 496-7249, 279-6251, or 659-4567. You may also visit ARF’s website at www.ARFund.org.

The Three Rivers Lions Club invites everyone to their open house, Friday, April 17, from 4 until 8 P.M. If you’ve often wondered what Lions do, this would be the perfect opportunity to find out. Learn more about the Ox Roast, Project Kidsight, White Cane, and much, much more. The Lions Service Center is located at 420 Sixth Avenue, directly across from Armstrong Field in Three Rivers. Refreshments will be available and your questions will be answered. Once you see the Service Center, you might want to consider renting it for a special event, such as a birthday party, a wedding or baby shower, or even a class reunion. Many have discovered that the Service Center is the perfect place for many special events. Would you like to learn more about Lion membership? You’ll find those answers as well. Lions Clubs International is the largest service organization in the world. Stop in and find out why.

With nicer and warmer weather approaching, you homemakers might seriously consider hanging your laundry outside to dry. When putting up new clothesline, attach each end to a short length of lightweight chain. Six to eight inches will do. Then, when the line needs to be tightened, move the chain up a notch or two. There’s nothing quite like the smell of bed sheets that have been dried outside in the fresh air.

Cast-iron skillets can be used for more than getting a husband’s attention or adjusting his attitude. They can also be used for preparing many tasty meals in the kitchen. When not in use, place a coffee filter in the skillet to absorb moisture and prevent rust. You didn’t think I’d put this column to bed without another coffee filter idea, did you?

A most blessed Easter season to each one of you, and I’ll see you Out and About.
