Julia S. Seiler, age 96, of Mendon, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday July 8, 2014 while residing at The Birches in Leonidas. She was born in Chicago on Oct. 13, 1917 the daughter of Peter and Martha (Debovey) Shewchuk. The family moved to Covert, MI when she was two years old, and she later graduated from Covert High School. She then attended Western Teachers College in Kalamazoo and first taught school in the Three Rivers School system. Julia was married to Richard H. Seiler in Mendon on May 22, 1943 while Dick was serving in the Army Air Corps. After WWII, they returned to Mendon and Julia taught briefly at Three Rivers and retired from Mendon Elementary where she taught for over 20 years.
Julia was a retired member of the Michigan Education Association and served as a Den Mother for the Mendon Cub Scouts. She was a Member of the Mendon United Methodist Church where she also taught Sunday School. Julia was an avid reader and Friend of the Mendon Library. She sewed many clothes for family and friends and enjoyed flower gardening.
Julia is survived by a son, Jerry (Beth) Seiler of Sturgis; two granddaughters, Jennifer Bruder of Fellows Falls, VT and Gwendolyn Mills of Hillsboro, NJ; four great grandchildren, Joshua and Connor Bruder and Gavin and Benjamin Mills; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Dick Seiler; two sons, Donald and Kenneth Seiler; brother, John Shewchuk; and sister, Olga Shewchuk.
In keeping with her wishes, cremation has been conducted. A memorial service will be announced in the late Summer or early Fall. It is suggested that memorial donations be directed to the Friends of the Mendon Library, 314 W. Main St., Mendon, MI 49072.
