Sheriff’s Department seeking grant renewal

The St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Department will pursue renewal of a grant that has allowed it to professionalize traffic-crash reconstruction.
With unanimous support of the county board of commissioners Monday, the Crash Accident Reconstruction Team grant request will be pursued.
If approved the $4,300 in grant money would allow the sheriff’s office to purchase a software enhancement and continue its funding of the CART. The grant, which the county has received annually since 2009, will be sought from the Traffic Safety Commission.
In another matter Monday, commissioners approved selling used security equipment from the sheriff’s department to Ottawa County. In exchange for nearly $19,000, St. Joseph County will sell off a total of 27 items, including 10 door and light controller cards, nine intercom controller cards and a 15-watt intercom amplifier.
Proceeds from the sale will be used by St. Joseph County to help fund the purchase and installation of a recording system for both interview rooms.
