Details regarding river access at five locations in St. Joseph County were provided simultaneously Monday in Three Rivers and Sturgis.
Officials from Edgewater Resources of St. Joseph split into two groups and gave an overview of their progress toward creating a master plan
At the Commission On Aging meal site in Three Rivers, landscape architect Suzanne Fromson focused on each of the five high-priority locations and explained details such as potential parking, canoe and kayak drop-off and pick-up locations, and other relevant issues.
Based on public input and their own observations, Edgewater officials identified the five locations. They are: the Portage River at Parkville Road in Park Township, Prairie River at Hoshel Park in Lockport Township, Fawn River at East Fawn River Road in Fawn River Township, and St. Joseph River at M-66 in Leonidas Township and Withers Road at the border of Florence and Constantine townships.
Edgewater is working at the behest of the county board, whose members want to establish St. Joseph County as a destination for paddlers.
Fromson noted 10 other locations for consideration in the years ahead. Three of those 10 locations are on the Fawn River, two each on the Rocky and Pigeon, and others are on the Prairie and St. Joseph rivers, and Nottawa Creek.
