Out and About – Week of November 24th

Thursday is Thanksgiving. You still have time to invite someone to join you for Thanksgiving dinner. If you look carefully, I’m sure you can find someone who is in need of the family atmosphere. Thanksgiving is the one day when no one should have to work. Unfortunately, there will be a few stores that will be open so that shoppers can get a jump on their holiday shopping. If I were King, I’d rule that all merchants would observe the holiday and be closed. That way everyone would be able to spend some quality time with their families and loved ones. If all the bad guys and girls would behave, we wouldn’t need any law enforcement people working. We can’t really give all the firefighters, EMTs, and paramedics the day off, because there’s a greater power who never takes a day off, and one never knows when the medical professionals might be called upon to act.
If you happen to have leftovers from your festive dinner, take them to your local fire station. While there, let those public safety personnel know how much you appreciate them working on the holiday. Oh, by the way, if your trash pick-up day is usually on Thursday, it will now be one day later. The same goes for Friday. It happens this way, because the trash recovery people have Thanksgiving Day off, but then they have to work that Saturday.
Back in the day, Bob Daugherty owned a donut shop right here on Main Street in Three Rivers. We’ve had one or two other bakeries since then, but none of them ever really compared to what Mr. Daugherty could make available. Who could ever forget those custard-filled triangles? We currently don’t have a real bakery in town, but we do have just about the closest thing to that. There’s a coffee shop located inside the old power plant on the west side of the railroad tracks on West Michigan Avenue. Monday through Friday, from 7:30 AM until 9:30 AM, Alexis works at the coffee shop, where she puts her skills to work baking some very tasty creations. Alexis is a high school senior at Three Rivers High School. Her goal is to attend the International Culinary Institute of America. The institute is located in New Hyde Park, New York. She plans to then work at a fine-dining restaurant where she will work her way up to becoming a Fine Dining Chef. Alexis works as an intern at the coffee shop, which means she doesn’t get paid. The positive thing about this venture is that all profits made from the sale of Alexis’s creations go directly into her college fund. I’ve had the opportunity to sample several of her creations, and about all I can say is, “Watch out Martha Stewart! Alexis is on the move!”
Alexis doesn’t spend all of her time in the kitchen. When she’s not reading the latest Martha Stewart magazine, she can be found on the tennis court or running around on the volleyball court. Congratulations Alexis. Keep up the good work. Thank you, Leslie Ann and Jerry, for giving this fine young adult the opportunity to prove herself.
If you’re one of those individuals who thought they knew everything, please check these facts out:
The liquid inside young coconuts can be used as a substitute for blood plasma.
You burn more calories sleeping than you do watching television.
Donkeys kill more people annually than plane crashes or shark attacks.
If you plan to travel over the Thanksgiving holiday, please drive defensively. Give yourself plenty of time to get to your destination.
If your plans involve staying around home, don’t forget to check on that neighbor who lives alone. Make sure they are not forgotten. If you have the time, visit a local nursing home. No one should ever spend Thanksgiving alone.
Above all, be thankful for all you have, and share with those less fortunate.
HAPPY THANKSGIVING, and I’ll see you Out and About!
