Gertrude Reed, 100

Gertrude Phoebe Reed, age 100, of Three Rivers, passed away on Monday, December 1, 2014 surrounded by her family at the Sunshine Care Home. She was born on May 8, 1914 in Akron, NY the daughter of Harry and Melvina(Mayne)Bluck. Gertrude graduated from Akron High School, attended Syracuse University, and graduated from the University of Michigan .
Before her marriage to R. Walter Reed she taught in the Mt. Clemens School System. They were married June 25, 1938 and came to Three Rivers at that time. She was a member of the GFWC Three Rivers Women’s Club for 43 years. She also served on the Three Rivers Hospital Auxiliary and the AAUW. As a member of the First Presbyterian Church she taught Sunday School and was a member of the Orrel Fulcher and Friendship Circles. She returned to teaching when her children were in high school and received her Master’s Degree from Western Michigan University. For several years she taught in the Three Rivers Community Schools and was Executive Director of the former Tri-County Girl Scout Council. During her retirement she enjoyed traveling, gardening, and reading
She leaves to cherish her loving memory, daughters, Sally(Bill)Amador and Susan(Daniel)Foltz ; sons, Dr. Thomas(Mary)Reed and Charles(Wendy)Reed ; sister, Ruth Kelley ; eight grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren, special cousins, Mary(Taylor)Snow and Pat Reed . Gertrude’s 100th birthday was celebrated in May, surrounded by her family from Washington, California, Idaho, Kentucky and Michigan as they shared memories and gratitude for her special role in their lives.
Cremation has taken place and a graveside service will be held at a later date in the spring at Riverside Cemetery.
Memorials in memory of Gertrude may be directed to The First Presbyterian Church, Three Rivers Hospital Auxiliary, or the Three Rivers Foundation. Envelopes available or can be sent to Hohner Funeral Home in care of arrangements.
