No signal changes for Sturgis intersection

A traffic signal at the intersection of South Nottawa and Congress streets will not be replaced with a four-way red flashing light, according to Sturgis municipal officials.
City commissioners agreed last week to deny an engineering recommendation to change the signal. Traffic studies had shown the intersection does not meet signal standards.
The majority of the board objected to making even a temporary change, saying it could create new traffic challenges and pose safety issues, especially for students attending school in the area.
As part of the design work for the Nottawa Street improvement, engineers conducted a traffic study at the intersection last fall. Findings indicated the intersection does not require a four- way signal and may handle traffic better with a four-way stop.
The city has received a $373,000 state grant for the second construction phase that will continue using brick to resurface the next stretch of South Nottawa Street, from Congress Street south to Mechanic Street. Designers plan to use white brick to mark crosswalks and red brick street pavers.
The Nottawa Street work will continue in the spring.
