Etta Jane (Lewis) Griffin, age 77, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, December 31, 2014, following a long and courageous battle with cancer. She was born in Three Rivers, MI on April 20, 1937, the daughter of the late Warren and Ruth (Franklin) Lewis.
Etta graduated from Three Rivers High School in 1955 and was DAR Pilgrim of her class that year. Following high school, she attended Central Bible College in Springfield, MO. She resided in Three Rivers the majority of her life working at Continental Can Co, First National Bank, and Armstrong International, where she retired in 2002 after 22 years of service. She also operated her own ceramic studio, Etta’s Ceramics, while living in Kalamazoo, MI for a brief period of time.
Etta was united in marriage to her high school sweetheart, Douglas Griffin, in 1959 who preceded her in death in 2008. She loved her family foremost and the many friends she made throughout the years. She always had a smile and a kind word for everyone. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, playing the organ, cooking (especially for family dinners), involvement in church activities, and genealogy. Etta also loved her community. She was a member of the Civitan Club for several years and during that time helped to organize and was in charge of fundraisers for the TR Rocket Football program. She also served on the Community Chest Board for eight years. She attended the First Baptist Church of Newberg.
She leaves to cherish her loving memory one brother, Robert (Sharlene) Lewis of Warsaw, IN; two sons, Douglas (Beth) Griffin, Jr. of Elkhart, IN and David (Kathy) Griffin of Three Rivers; one daughter, Kathy (Tony) Sampson of Three Rivers; 11 grandchildren, Chelsea, Kaitlyn, and Douglas “Max” Griffin, III, Josh (Stacy ) Griffin, David (Alisa ) Griffin, Tammy Griffin, Suzanne (Eric ) James, Jacob (Bree Ann) Sampson, Michael Sampson, Adam and Karri Sandusky; eight great-grandchildren, and her very dear and special friend, Fory Leer.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Monday, January 5, 2015 at Hohner Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 6, 2015 at First Baptist Church of Newberg with Pastor Mike Owen officiating. Interment will be held at Moorepark Cemetery.
