Honors for two former legislators

A pair of legislators who collectively represented St. Joseph County for a full decade was honored by a panel of county officials this week.

Former State Sen. Bruce Caswell and former State Rep. Matt Lori were acknowledged by the St. Joseph County Board of Commissioners during Tuesday’s meeting.

Resolutions honoring the pair were read by Commissioner Rick Shaffer and approved by the five-member commission.

Reading from a proclamation for Caswell, Shaffer said the county board “recognizes and expresses grateful appreciation for the devoted service that Senator Bruce Caswell has given to the citizens of St. Joseph County.”

Caswell spent the past four years as state senator but chose to not seek re-election.

Regarding Lori, Shaffer quoted the proclamation in saying Lori made the sacrifice of time and energy beyond the bounds of duty that can never be adequately acknowledged by an appreciative public.

Lori, a Constantine-area resident, served six years as a House member. He was forced to step down due to term limits.

Neither Caswell nor Lori spoke after the brief ceremony, though they did express their gratitude to commissioners for the recognition.
