Burr Oak teacher honored with Excellence in Education award

A St. Joseph County educator known for using hands-on experiences to help students learn about science, and for her support and leadership of a variety of school programs, has been honored with an Excellence in Education award from the Michigan Lottery.
Jan Summey a science teacher at Burr Oak Middle School, recently won the weekly award. She will receive a plaque, a $500 cash prize, and a $500 grant to her classroom, school or school district.  One of the weekly winners will be selected as the Educator of the Year and will receive a $10,000 cash prize.
Summey, an educator for 22 years, said she is inspired to do her best each day in the classroom by her students and the people she works with.
Summey said she plans to use her award money to buy science materials for her classes and to provide resources to help students create their science fair projects.
