CCW permit legislation

The Michigan Senate Tuesday on a 28-9 vote approved legislation designed to speed up the process for obtaining a concealed weapons permit in Michigan. Specifically, the bills eliminate county gun boards and transfers the permit procedure to county clerks, sheriffs and the Michigan State Police. An earlier version of the measure had been vetoed by Governor Rick Snyder, who said it also would have lifted a blanket prohibition for subjects of a personal protection order. That provision was left out of this legislation. The new bills would give State Police responsibility for verifying whether an applicant is eligible. A renewal would have to be issued or denied within 30 days instead of the current 60-day deadline. The measures now go to the House.  (MRN)
