Approval of a sheriff’s department personnel change was the most noteworthy matter of business during Tuesday’s St. Joseph County Board of Commissioners meeting.
In advance of Capt. Tim Schuler’s impending retirement, commissioners OK’d the department’s request to fill his position. Subsequently, the commission agreed to hire Kitty Buchner to succeed Schuler.
Buchner, who has served as administrative secretary and is a 23-year employee with the sheriff’s department, will begin the post April 1. Her pay rate is to be determined.
Buchner is a Mendon resident who also serves as president of the Mendon Village Council.
Following action by commissioners Tuesday, Buchner’s job at the sheriff’s department will be filled by Susan Leist, currently a part-time clerk and typist. Leist will earn $17 an hour as the full-time sheriff’s administrative secretary.
