Traffic stop leads to drug arrest

Cass County Prosecutor Victor Fitz said alert police work during a routine traffic stop led to a felony methamphetamine conviction of a Sturgis man Wednesday.
Fitz said sheriff’s deputy Clint Roach was on patrol in Porter Township when he observed David Greene, 46, driving a vehicle with expired license plates.
Greene was stopped and cited for expired plates and no insurance. Cass County Chief Assistant Prosecutor Frank Machnick, who tried the case, established that during the process of the stop and tow, two marijuana cigarettes were discovered in the truck’s ash tray. In addition, a baggie containing methamphetamine was found by Roach.
Fitz said Greene admitted the marijuana in the car was his and he admitted that he used methamphetamine. After 45 minutes of deliberation Wednesday, a jury found Greene guilty of possession of methamphetamine and possession of marijuana.
Sentencing is scheduled for April 17 in front of Cass Circuit Judge Michael Dodge.
