Sturgis to receive school safety grant

State police said 56 Michigan public school districts – including Sturgis Public Schools – will get a share of $4 million in funding to boost school safety.
The money announced last week will be used to purchase equipment and technology to improve the safety and security of school buildings, students and staff.
Grant recipients have until Sept. 15 to spend their awards. State police say more than $46 million in requests was made for funding through the Competitive School Safety Grant Program.
There were 289 applications received, totaling over $46 million in requests. Of the $4 million appropriated for the Competitive School Safety Grant Program, 80 percent was required to be awarded to K-12 schools and 20 percent to sheriff’s departments.
