The prospect of a new county animal shelter facility remains a possibility, as members of the St. Joseph County Board of Commissioners revisited the issue during a work session Tuesday.
Commissioner Rick Shaffer, a member of the animal control advisory board, said he favors a new building over refurbishing the current building.
Meanwhile, Commissioner Don Eaton, who has visited facilities in Otsego and Calhoun counties, estimated a quality structure with adequate amenities for the care of dog and cats would likely range between $600,000 and $800,000.
Regarding funding of the proposed shelter, commissioners agreed to include the matter when they stage a meeting with a municipal bond council to discuss funding athletic fields in Three Rivers and Sturgis.
