Sturgis will send resolution to legislature to repeal fireworks safety act

Sturgis city commissioners recently voted to repeal Michigan’s Fireworks Safety Act, saying the 2011 law took away local government’s ability to regulate consumer fireworks.
The law liberalized fireworks sales in the state and limited local governments’ oversight authority.
Following the latest July 4 holiday, commissioners had complained about widespread use of loud pyrotechnics in Sturgis neighborhoods, claiming it created a public nuisance in many circumstances.
The resolution, which will be sent to Gov. Snyder, State Sen. John Proos and State Rep. Aaron Miller, asks the Michigan Legislature to repeal the act and recognize a local unit of government’s obligation to preserve the quality of life and safety that its citizens expect.
