School board recall – Not enough valid signatures

A recall effort in which a trio of Three Rivers Board of Education members has been targeted appears to have reached a conclusion.
County clerk Lindsay Oswald said the minimum number of valid signatures required for the recall to appear before voters in the November election fell short on all three petitions.
A minimum of 1,165 valid signatures was necessary for what would have been a Nov. 3 recall vote of vice president Waneta Truckey, secretary Carl Barth and president Mike Bosma.
According to Oswald, Truckey and Barth both wound up with 1,148 valid signatures, while Bosma’s petition featured 1,153 legitimate signatures.
Oswald said the validation process included checking whether the person who signed a petition is a resident of the district and a registered voter. In all, the clerk’s office dismissed 273 signatures on Truckey’s petition, 256 on Barth’s and 194 on Bosma’s.
The three were targeted after the board voted April 29 to not renew the contracts of dean of educational services Kevin Hamilton, middle school principal Bradley Coon and athletic director Pete Anderson.
TR Cares leader Sherrie Nowicki said she plans to go over the situation with attorney Kelly Ward and has not ruled out the possibility of a lawsuit against the clerk’s office over how the signature-validation process was handled.
