Nancy L. Roush, of Three Rivers, went to be with her Lord Thursday, Sept. 3, 2015, at Rose Arbor Hospice in Kalamazoo. She was 83.
Nancy was born Nov. 10, 1931 in Bad Axe, the daughter of Philip and Eva (Clothier) Prowse. She was the youngest of eight children.
At the time of her parents’ death – her mother in 1939, her father in 1941 — the family resided in Three Rivers. After that, Nancy lived with several relatives, most notably her maternal aunt, Bessie (Clothier) Johnson, in Fremont. She would attend high schools in Fremont, Kalamazoo and upstate New York before returning to Three Rivers, where she graduated from Three Rivers High School in 1950. After that, she attended Elkhart Business University in Elkhart, Ind., where she graduated from a medical secretary program, and later became a Registered Medical Technician and worked at Three Rivers Hospital as a laboratory technician.
In the 1960s, as a single mother back in the job market, Nancy would go on to work as a secretary and bookkeeper for First United Methodist Church of Three Rivers, as a darkroom technician and later Society Editor (women’s page editor) at the Three Rivers Commercial. In the 1970s, she began work as a secretary in the adult and community education department of the Three Rivers Community Schools.
She retired from the school district in 1993, and enjoyed retirement in Three Rivers with her children’s and grandchildren’s activities. She was also a founding member of the Three Rivers Community Players and appeared in several of its shows, as well as working on props and sound and serving as an usher into her 80s. She also led the funeral planning team at First United Methodist Church of Three Rivers, where she served on numerous other committees and board, including the church’s annual Methodist Fair rummage and craft sale.
Nancy was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Daniel and Gerald; and sisters Phyllis, Elizabeth, Marjorie and Joan. She is survived by a sister, Florine Christensen of Kiel, Wis.; sons Matthew (Susan) Roush of Dearborn and Timothy (Pamela) Roush of Plainwell; and four grandchildren, Benjamin of Rochester, Minn., David of Alexandria, Va., Amanda of Ann Arbor, and Peter of Kalamazoo.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10th at the Eickhoff Farrand Halverson Chapel in Three Rivers. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 11th at the funeral home with Rev. Jim Stillwell, Pastor of the First and Ninth Street United Methodist Churches officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to either the First United Methodist Church, or to Rose Arbor Hospice. Online condolences may be expressed at www.efhchapel.com
