Mendon plans overlook deck

The village of Mendon took a significant step this week to better showcase its picturesque location along the St. Joseph River.
The Mendon Downtown Development Authority voted Monday to support plans for development of an overlook deck. The elevated platform will feature a 32-by-48-foot deck to offer a panoramic view of the river.
Village manager John Hyden said the development is scheduled to take place before the end of the year.
First, however, a 70-year-old building abandoned at least the past four years will be razed. The one-time resale shop at 219 W. Main St. is expected to be demolished this weekend, Hyden said. The village picked up the parcel at a county tax sale over the summer.
Hyden said building demolition and overlook deck construction costs are between $35,000 and $45,000.
Trees around the property will be trimmed to afford a better view of the river, Hyden added.
