Fencing to be allowed in downtown Sturgis

A decision by the Sturgis Planning Commission will allow various types of fencing in the downtown central business district designed to accommodate some new commercial uses.
City officials last week said outdoor eating areas, mainly at locations that serve alcohol, must have perimeter fencing to cordon them from general pedestrian traffic. Some commercial fencing also is expected in the area around the relocated depot building downtown.
Language added to city rules for the central business district include six-foot-high masonry walls to screen dumpsters and parking areas and 36-to-60-inch ornamental fencing constructed of cast iron or decorative metal for other uses allowed by ordinance.
