Low voter turnout in Three Rivers

Not surprisingly, a low voter turnout was recorded in three municipalities where elections took place Tuesday.
In Three Rivers, about 5 percent of the city’s 5,100 registered voters participated in an uncontested election that saw Mayor Tom Lowry secure an additional two-year term. The 59-year-old Lowry, who has served as mayor of St. Joseph County’s second-largest community for 16 years, garnered 219 votes.
Incumbents Jared Hoffmaster and Diane Clay also were on Tuesday’s ballot. Hoffmaster, 33, has served a pair of two-year terms as First District commissioner. He secured 204 votes. Meanwhile, Clay, 58, represents the city’s Third District and earned 212 votes. She has completed one two-year term.
Newcomer Janell Hart,60, received 224 votes for the commissioner-at-large post. She replaces Linda Gearhart, who chose to not seek re-election.
All commissioner seats are for two-year terms.
