Sturgis senior center construction on track

Construction of the new Sturgis senior center is on track for an early-March move-in, according to St. Joseph County Commission On Aging officials.
Furthermore, COA officials said there may be a buyer for the current Paul Cassault Center, the longtime Sturgis home of south-county senior services.
Lynn Coursey, COA executive director, said the new site under construction on North Franks Avenue is beginning interior work and some exterior grading has been done.
Coursey said the COA is still looking for nominations for a name for the place so it can plan for signage for the $2.6 million facility.
She noted that fundraising for new furnishings and supplies has garnered $11,000 to date, plus a $5,000 pledge, from area businesses, organizations and individuals.
Meanwhile, Coursey said, a $20,000 cash deal is on the table for purchase of the Cassault Center at 304 N. Jefferson St. The center’s board had previously passed on a $15,000 offer for the building that has a $59,000 assessed value.
