Woman dies after vehicle struck by train

An Indiana woman died Friday after the vehicle she was driving was struck by a freight train in Pokagon Township.
Sheriff Joe Underwood said the woman, Barbara Schult, of Middlebury, was driving east at 3:44 p.m. on Pokagon Highway when she passed stationary vehicles that had stopped when the crossing signal activated.
Schult drove through the crossing, despite visual and audio warnings from the signal, and was struck by the engine of the train.
Engineer David Morgan, 52, of Battle Creek, applied the engine’s emergency brake but the locomotive was unable to stop in time.
Morgan was transported by ambulance to Lakeland Hospital in Niles for treatment. Schult was declared deceased at the scene.
Investigators said safety belt and alcohol use is unknown.
