School millage request is defeated

Officials from Three Rivers Community Schools will have plenty to discuss at their next meeting, as the district’s second failed millage request in 10 months went down Tuesday by a 3-to-2 margin.

With all 24 precincts reporting, unofficial results show the 1.95-mill increase request was rejected, 2,240 to 1,501.

The shortfall came despite a solid public-relations campaign to promote details and information about the issue. Board president Pete Bennett said the effort, however, wasn’t convincing enough.

He said the board will have to decide a course of action relative to the ongoing need for additional funding.

The proposal would have covered an eight-year period and would have generated more than $1.25 million annually based on 2015 taxable values.

A similar request in the 2,700-student district was rejected by nearly a 3-to-1 margin in May 2015.
