David Lee Trine, age 78, of Sturgis, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, May 4, 2016, at his home.
David was born March 30, 1938, in Quincy, Ill., a son to the late David M. and Ruth I. (Hartwig) Trine.
He had served in the U.S. Air Force from 1956 to 1960.
On June 26, 1960, he married Iva Jean Thurston, and she preceded him in death in 1998.
Dave had lived all his life in the Colon and Sturgis area, where he had worked in manufacturing for several area businesses.
He was a member of the Christian Motor Cycle Association, American Motor Cycle Association, St. Joseph County Conservation Club and the NRA. David’s passion was fixing, buying and selling guns and he was always on his way to the next gun show.
He is survived by three children, Timothy (Tracey) Trine, Deb (Doug) Adams and James Trine, all of Sturgis; five grandchildren, Christina Tolin, Joshua Bell, Matthew Bell, Austin Trine and Sara Trine; four great-grandchildren; five sisters, Carolyn A. Grabe of Sturgis, Patricia Clouse of Angola, Ind., Lula Mae (Ken) Grabe of White Pigeon, Ruth A. (Bill) Brandt of Colon and Doris (Steven) Hassenger of Colon; five brothers, O. Gene (Jane) Trine of Burr Oak, Earl W. Trine of Colon, James L. (Kathy) Trine of Colon, Paul E. (Sandy) Trine of Burr Oak and Larry A. Trine of Bronson; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife; and a brother, Michael Trine.
The family will receive relatives and friends from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Sunday at Schipper Funeral Home in Colon. Funeral services celebrating the life of David Lee Trine will be at 11 a.m. Monday, May 9, 2016, at the funeral home, with the Rev. David J. Farrell officiating. Burial will follow at Sherwood Cemetery in Sherwood, with military by the U.S. Air Force Honor Guard.
If desired, the family suggests memorials be made in memory of David to either the St. Joseph County Conservation Club or American Cancer Society. Envelopes are available at the funeral home
