A longtime Glen Oaks Community College professor with a strong dedication to military veterans was named the 2016 E.J. Shaheen Teaching Excellence Award winner.
The honor recognizing Bill Furr was announced during the college’s 48th graduation ceremony Friday.
A Detroit native and Sturgis resident, Furr has been a Glen Oaks business professor full-time since 2003 and is credited with establishing the school’s distance-learning program. On a lighter note, Furr and his colleague, Lester Keith, created the school’s annual Fun Day, its egg-toss competitions, cake walks, the original holiday turkey bowling and what was then a record for the world’s largest meatball in 2010.
Furr is a Vietnam veteran.
The E. J. Shaheen Chair for Teaching and Excellence Award was initiated in 1984 and is the college’s highest faculty-awarded honor.
