Motorists in the Centreville area have been given a brief reprieve from a major detour impacting M-86 traffic to the east.
Replacement of the M-86 bridge over the Prairie River in Nottawa Township was slated to begin this month but instead will commence in mid July, according to Michigan Department of Transportation spokesman Nick Schirripa.
The $4.9 million project is expected to conclude around Thanksgiving.
He said the current structure – a camelback pony truss bridge built in 1923 on Telegraph Road in Detroit – is 90 feet long. Its replacement will be 104 feet in length.
Detour traffic will be directed to Featherstone Road between M-66 to the east and Shimmel Road to the west.
The $4.9 million cost includes rehabilitating and relocating the current bridge to the local road system in Pokagon Township in Cass County.
