Dozens of show birds killed in Berrien County fire

Authorities say an accidental fire killed dozens of show birds in southwestern Michigan, including many homing and racing pigeons.

Crews responded Wednesday to Dove Nest Bed & Breakfast in Berrien County’s Royalton Township and found a building on the property where the birds were kept was on fire.

John Nelson tells The Herald-Palladium of St. Joseph he had between 200 and 250 birds, and that about 30 homing pigeons were already outside when the fire broke out. Nelson was unable to get to the birds that were on an upper level inside the building.

WSJM-AM reports more than 100 birds died.

Nelson, who owns the bed and breakfast with his wife, has raised birds for roughly 60 years. Fire officials didn’t specify the cause of the fire.  (AP)
